The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported that paraffin candles tested, contained carcinogens above the "Excess Cancer Risk" level. The majority of candles are made with paraffin wax, a petroleum based by-product of refined gasoline. Studies have shown that carcinogens released by paraffin wax candles are as dangerous as second hand cigarette smoke and can cause harm to the heart, lungs, circulatory system, and nervous system. Paraffin wax candles release carcinogens into the atmosphere, which when burned are similar to that of diesel being burned by a truck.
